Why You Can't Fully Receive Money (and What It's Costing You)

Someone gives you a compliment. What do you do?

Do you hand it back? "Oh, this old thing." Or find the flaw in the compliment, maybe not out loud, maybe in your head. You change the subject. You return the compliment so fast it never lands inside of you?

Me too. I catch myself doing it all the time. It can be subtle and not always noticeable.

Twenty years sitting across from women and their money, and here's the thing I keep seeing. We know how to give. We don't know how to receive.

It's never just one thing. But this lack of receiving energy runs through almost all of my clients.

Two ways it shows up

The woman who gives too much. Funds everyone else first. Over-gives, over-lends, empties herself out, and calls it love. She gives to be loved. To be safe. To never be a burden. Giving feels safe. Receiving feels like exposure. Receiving is vulnerable.

That's one side.

Here's the other. The woman who holds on. Grips what she has. Can't quite be generous, and feels ashamed of it. Like something's wrong with her for not giving more freely.

Two opposite women. Same root. Neither one can receive.

The over-giver can't take anything in, so she only gives. The holder can't take anything in either, so she grips what little she feels she has. Both are running on empty and they’re starving for the same thing. Neither one knows how to let it in. Or even what it feels like to fully receive.

So if you've carried shame for not being generous enough, hear me. It's not a generosity problem. It's a receiving problem. You can't pour from a cup that's empty. Or more accurately, a cup no one is allowed to fill.

Give and take, or gift and receive

There are two ways money moves between people. They look the same, but they're not.

Give and take. I give you money, you take it, done. I want to buy something, it costs a certain amount of money, you give the money and get the item. A one and a zero. A transaction that you both agreed upon. There are many nuances to this, and we will unpack it. But that is the basis of give and take.

Gift and receive. Someone gives, really gives, no strings. And the other person actually receives. Not takes. Receives.

When you fully receive, you're giving something back to the energetic exchange. The person who gave gets to feel the expansion of full receiving when there is nothing in the way of receiving. That's a gift to them. Their gift only completes when you receive it.

So receiving isn't selfish. Receiving is generous. It might be the most generous thing you can do.

And when both happen at once, the giving and the receiving, it doesn't stop. It ripples. It expands. It goes both directions and keeps going.

But if no one receives, the gift has nowhere to land. It stops there. That's give and take. Clean, finite, dead-ended. The energy just sits. Of course, when someone is truly gifting the ripple of change still happens, but it doesn’t multiply the same way when it is truly received.

Money held in gift-and-receive grows. Money stuck in give-and-take stays finite. Same dollars. Completely different energetic current.

Why we can't receive

So why is it so hard?

Watch your body next time something good comes toward you. Money you didn't expect. Help you didn't ask for. A gift with no strings.

Of course, at first it could feel amazing. But sit with it and see if you are receiving it fully. Ask yourself the question.

Is there a flicker? Are there strings attached? Is it too good to be true? Will the other shoe drop? Or this won't last, so don't get comfortable. Better use it now, before it's gone.

That last one is scarcity. Take it all now, because there won't be more. When you receive money for no reason, where does your mind go?

Have you ever watched a baby? A baby doesn't tense up when it's fed. Doesn't think the milk is a trick. Doesn't wonder what it'll owe. It just receives. Fully. That's how every one of us started.

The story and the shutdown came later. Somewhere the good thing went away, or came with a price, and your body learned. Learned that receiving isn't safe. You may have learned to grab and hold instead of open and trust.

That's the way you learned to survive. But if this is what is happening to you still, your nervous system is running an old program. And you can rewrite it.

The muscle

Receiving is a muscle. You weren't born without it. You had it as a baby. You learned to shut it off. Which means you can learn to turn it back on.

You don't start with money. You start small.

Let a compliment land. Say thank you, then stop talking, and let it be true. Take the help when someone offers. Take the gift. Feel your body brace, and stay open one breath longer than is comfortable. You are still taking, not fully receiving. But this is the beginning of opening your ability to receive.

That's the whole practice. Feel the resistance. Stay open anyway. Let it in.

It’s not always easy. But it will change everything, because a body that can receive a compliment can eventually receive a windfall. Same muscle. We just build it where it's safe first.

Here is something to notice about money. If you have money come into your life, do you do this?

You immediately decide where the money goes. This is how you stop receiving it.

The dollar comes in, and before you even feel it, you've handed it a job. The bill. The debt. The someone who needs it more. You never got to just have it. Feel it in your hands. Let your body register: it's here, it's mine, I'm okay.

That half-second of just having it, before you spend it in your mind, is receiving. Most of us skip it completely.

This is the ground floor

This is the start of something I'm going to keep unpacking with you.

Give and take is the old wiring. The survival brain.

Gift and receive is the evolved one. A more spiritual currency. One that expands instead of just changing hands.

We're going to untangle what gets in the way, piece by piece, and learn how to receive fully. This is where it begins.

And it begins with gratitude. Gratitude is the doorway. Sit in real gratitude for what's already here, and the body softens. A soft body can receive. I made a short gratitude meditation to help you drop in. It's free. Call it your first rep.
